In his blog post, Dr. Ignatius Piazza (Founder and Director Front Sight Firearms Training Institute) stated the difficulties presented in trying to train in 100+ degree Nevada summer heat while wearing a mask being extremely difficult and added that wearing safety glasses on top of that makes it down right impossible and dangerous.
Portion of the Blog Post (link to the rest at the end):
As you know, Front Sight was forced to stop training students due to the Governor of Nevada issuing orders that restricted all sorts of businesses and activities, especially those where large groups of people participated. Church services, concerts, movie theaters, casinos, gymnasiums, sporting events, etc., were all shut down and remain closed.
The Governor recently removed the required 14 day quarantine if non-residents entered Nevada, so now I can actually enter Nevada to visit my own business and not be forced to stay in a hotel room for two weeks before stepping foot on my Front Sight property.
The Governor modified the “no gatherings of more than 10 people” to now allow gatherings of up to 50.
If you have ever attended a course at Front Sight, you know that we don’t train 50 people over a weekend. We train SEVERAL HUNDREDS every day. During the Spring and Fall we routinely have over 1,000 students attending courses all on the same day, so increasing the number from 10- 50 would still require us to turn LOTS of members and students away, which we have never done in our 24 year history.
The Governor is still requiring social distancing of 6 feet, which creates a serious firearms training safety situation as we would not be able to use our safety coach system of training, nor would our instructors be close enough to see or intervene should a student inadvertently place their finger on the trigger when it is not supposed to be on the trigger (holstering or presenting the weapon from the holster) or should the student inadvertently turn away from the range with a gun in his hand during a training drill.
The Governor is still requiring everyone to be masked. In the heat of June, July and August, even at night, the mask creates a real health concern. It is hard enough to breath in those damn masks and the heat simply compounds the stress on our bodies when trying to breathe. They also impede important communication, especially at the social distances.
For those of you who wear glasses, I am sure you have noticed that your glasses fog up while wearing a mask. During firearms training, you MUST wear safety glasses. With a mask in place our students and instructors are going to have difficulty seeing through fogged glasses.
Then there are all the sanitation requirements of anything touched or shared by the public. Cleaning bathrooms constantly is not a problem as we do it anyway as part of good hygiene. However, all the rental guns, magazines, ear protection, eye protection, belts, holsters, ammo boxes, pro shop supplies, etc. is problematic at best and impossible at worst.
So for all the reasons above, most notably the firearms training safety issues created by the continued COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to deliver the extremely high level of training that Front Sight normally provides. We do not want to dilute in any way the curriculum or safety or stellar results of our training, nor do we want to sacrifice or diminish the Front Sight Experience for the thousands of students who travel across the country for the best firearms training experience in the world.
FOR THESE REASONS, FRONT SIGHT’S LAS VEGAS AND ALASKA FACILITIES WILL REMAIN CLOSED THROUGH THE SUMMER. WE WILL KEEP OUR STAFF EMPLOYED ON SPECIAL PROJECTS AND INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE SUMMER. WE WILL RE-OPEN WITHOUT FAIL, UNDER OUR NORMAL POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND TRAINING CURRICULUM ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2020.
Our training schedule is posted on our website from September 2020 through February 2021, so sign up for the course(s) you want immediately.
With all that is going on in the world today, if you have not yet attended a course at Front Sight, to become expertly trained in handgun, shotgun, and rifle, then YOU SHOULD!
